ABOUT THE BUSINESS OWNER

MEET JAMES "MIKE" HIGGINBOTHAM

Originally from Oklahoma, hunting and fishing are Mike's primary pastimes. And the safety aspect was a family edict. Mike has been an avid shooter since the age of 9 when his first exposure to firearms was from his father, a skilled hunter and fisherman. At 11 years old, Mike was introduced to the NRA.

After a long career in the Marine and Recreational Vehicle business, Mike grew restless being retired. In January 2020, Mike decided to become a Certified Firearms Instructor. Starting first with the United States Concealed Carry Association training, he went on to National Rifle Association training and became certified by both associations.

Certifications awarded include Basics of Pistol Shooting, Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals, Women’s Handgun and Self Defense Fundamentals, Countering the Mass Shooter Threat, and Emergency First Aid Fundamentals, and more.

With a firm grounding in training and customer service, classes are always held to high standards with interaction from students a primary consideration. For Mike, making learning fun is a primary goal, right behind Firearms Safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How do I know which gun is right for me?

Most people have a friend or relative that can help them with possible firearm choices. Not everyone is good at suggesting something for someone else. For a male to suggest to a female what kind of gun she is going to like, requires a bit more expertise about firearms than most people realize.

The best gun for anyone is the gun they shoot comfortably enough to practice a lot. At Freedom Services & Training, we believe that if you're going to own and use a gun, you should enjoy it!

  • Do I need to buy a gun before I take a class in shooting?

Absolutely not. Most shooting classes that we suggest taking first spend a good deal of time focusing on which firearm works best in a critical attack. The one that works best is the one that you have shot the most. The one that you have practiced most with should be the gun you are most comfortable with. You have a better chance of hitting your target and stopping a threat if you have practiced a lot with your firearm.

So buying the “right one for you” should be considered from many viewpoints. Most instructors like covering this information with new shooters before they buy a gun to know that the one they bring to class is going to be the one they are happy with and will practice with.

  • If I am to intelligently choose a firearm, what should I consider when making a purchase?

Several things come into play when choosing a firearm. How do you plan to use the gun? Are you going to use it for target shooting, just for plinking, or are you using it as an everyday carry for personal protection? If you carry for personal protection, will you carry on body or off body? What kind of clothing will you wear when you are transporting the firearm?

Shooting the gun first comes before figuring out anything else. Finding a suitable firearm encourages you to practice more. Practicing more makes you more capable of putting shots on targets. Whether it be paper or a threat, having that ability is vital.

  • Who should I talk to if I don’t know anything about guns before I buy my first pistol?

Friends and family will always share the knowledge they have when it comes to firearms. Unfortunately, everyone has opinions, and many are not grounded in fact. But it is a good idea to ask, anyway. Likewise, salespeople often have opinions based on what they have that they can sell. It will be up to you to decide, and it can be a very stressful process.

Many gun ranges rent guns for shooting which can help with decision-making. Many instructors have guns that can be on the range to help decide if the gun of choice is the right gun for you. The fee for this type of “fact-finding” is money well spent since no well-made firearm is inexpensive.
